India Suspends Postal Services to US
From August 25, 2025, India will temporarily stop all postal services to the US due to recent changes in American customs regulations.
New US Customs Order
Executive Order No. 14324 abolished the earlier duty-free limit of $800, requiring every parcel to pay customs duty upon arrival in America.
Small Exemption Still Allowed
While general parcels will attract duty, America has allowed gifts up to $100 to remain duty-free, offering limited relief to families and individuals.
Earlier Duty-Free System
Previously, parcels worth up to $700–750 could be sent from India to America without customs duty, benefitting families, students, and small traders significantly.
Trump’s New Tariffs
US President Donald Trump imposed a 25% import duty on Indian goods, plus penalties on Russian oil, increasing costs for Indian exporters and consumers.
Postal Department’s Clarification
India’s Postal Department announced only letters, documents, and gifts up to $100 can now be sent, while refunds will be given for undelivered parcels.
Airline Challenges and Rules
Airlines have refused to carry US parcels after August 25, citing unclear US Customs rules on qualified parties and duty recovery procedures.
Impact on Families and Students
Indian families and students in the US will face difficulty receiving essentials like food, medicines, books, and gifts due to new costly customs procedures.
Impact on Traders and Sellers
Small e-commerce sellers exporting to the US will suffer losses as high duties and complex rules make shipping unaffordable and operationally challenging.
Temporary but Uncertain Suspension
Although India termed this postal halt temporary, the future depends on US rule clarity and airline readiness, leaving millions of people still affected.
