PM Modi categorically dismisses US mediators: A plain response on Indo-Pak ceasefire

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a pure message to former US President Donald Trump June 17, 2025, that India-Pakistan is not a product of any American mediation recently. While talking for Trump in the name of a 35-minute mobile phone on the edge of the G7 summit organized in Canada, Prime Minister Modi made it clear that India in any way did not ask for any 1/3-Barthly festive mediation and could not ask for it in any way.

Background of the May 2025 conflict and ceasefire

In April 2025, 26 civilians were martyred by a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir. Subsequently, India attacked military targets on suspected terrorist hideouts in Pakistan. This heightened tensions between the two nations considerably and the situation had become similar to a war.

On May 10, both the nations mutually declared a ceasefire. In this period, Pakistan appreciated global initiatives including those of the US, but India asserted that this move was made due to direct conversations between the military leaders of both the nations, no other country played any role in it.

Trump’s allegations and India’s reaction

Former US President Donald Trump had stated that the US was instrumental in facilitating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Trump also asserted that India itself requested him to mediate on the Kashmir issue and that the talks became possible only because of the US pressure.

But Prime Minister Modi totally refuted these allegations. He stated that India has always been convinced that any and every problem concerning Pakistan must be addressed through mutual talk, not through mediation by any third country. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri also corroborated this and stated that the ceasefire was purely the outcome of mutual talks between Indian and Pakistani military officers.

India’s firm stand on bilateral policy

This policy of India is not new. The Shimla Agreement of 1972 makes it very clear that all India-Pakistan disputes will be settled by direct dialogue. This resounding reaffirmance by Prime Minister Modi of this policy comes as a clear answer.

This firm reaction of the government is not only a declaration, but also a warning that India will not make any compromises regarding its foreign policy and national interests. This message has been addressed particularly to those foreign countries who continuously try to intervene in India-Pakistan matters.

Impact on India-US relations

While this crisp exchange between Modi and Trump could add some strain in the relations between the two nations, it is at the same time a strong assertion of India’s autonomous foreign policy. India wishes to demonstrate that it does not bow to any pressure and that its policy is derived out of its national interests, and not what external powers think.

In the times to come, India and America can go on cooperating on matters of mutual trade, defense and strategic cooperation, but on matters of sensitivities such as Pakistan and Kashmir, India’s policy is firm – no interference by an external agency.

Conclusion

Prime Minister Modi’s unequivocal assertion that the US had no hand in the Indo-Pak ceasefire not only reiterates India’s foreign policy but also demonstrates that India will not compromise on its sovereignty at any cost.

This evolution is not only a new development in India-US relations but also informs the entire world how seriously and clearly India approaches its diplomatic policy and sensitive matters. This attitude of the Modi government can further establish India’s global reputation in the future years.
