Nani Explains Why Bollywood’s Jersey Remake Failed Despite Shahid Kapoor’s Brilliant Acting

Natural Star Nani delivered one of his career-best performances in the 2019 sports drama Jersey. The film was directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri and received widespread acclaim from fans and critics alike. Two years after the Telugu release, the director remade it in Hindi with Shahid Kapoor as the lead. The film did not achieve the same box-office success as the original. Recently, Hit 3 actor Nani was asked to share his views on why Jersey did not work in Bollywood.

Nani on why Jersey didn’t work in Bollywood

The Hindi remake, which was released in 2022 and made on a budget of Rs 80 crore, took Nani’s stardom to yet another level. In an interview with Raj Shamani, Nani opened up about why the version didn’t work as well as the original. He said, “COVID was just done, you just started stepping out. And, people were used to seeing great content at home due to the lockdown, and from now on they were not stepping out to watch great content. They wanted masala, energy to go to the theatres. Jersey is a great film, in the Hindi version too. I’ve seen it. I think this is the reason.”

“At the same time, KGF went around, larger-than-life, energy, and people looted for it. Now, they’ve been at home, sitting. They wanted to go to the theaters and hear an energetic, cinematic moment. I think it was just the timing and placement; it wouldn’t have worked out if it was released at a different time period. And Shahid is an amazing actor,” Nani the actor and producer added.

The film was written and directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri and produced by Naga Vamsi, while the soundtrack was composed by Anirudh Ravichander.

Meanwhile, on the professional side, Nani was recently seen in Hit: The Third Case alongside Srinidhi Shetty. The film is being faced off at the box office by stiff competition from Suriya’s Retro, which opened in theaters on the same day, May 1.
