1️⃣ Google’s mistake made a big disclosure

  • Before Google I/O 2025, a blog post of Google was accidentally published, in which information about Android’s new design language Material 3 Expressive was found.

2️⃣ Beyond Material 3, now it’s Expressive’s turn

  • The new design system will be called “Material Design 3 Expressive”, which will be the next phase of Material 3 and it will try to give Android apps a more lively and emotionally connected experience.

3️⃣ Emphasis on emotional connection

  • According to Google’s leaked blog, this new design will focus on “emotional connection” i.e. emotional connection between the user and the interface.

4️⃣ Dominance of colors and shapes

  • Material 3 Expressive will use more bold colors and unique shapes to make the user interface more attractive and innovative.

5️⃣ User experience will be better

  • This new system will help app developers design better interactions, making Android devices more intuitive and enjoyable to use.

6️⃣ Easy for older users too

  • According to Google, this expressive design can make it easier for older adults to use apps as well, giving people of all age groups a similar experience.

7️⃣ Next to Material You

  • Material 3 Expressive is not a complete redesign, but it is an evolved version of the “Material You” design system that came in 2021, which emphasized personalization.

8️⃣ Not for everyone, customization is necessary

  • Google also clarified that Expressive Design is not a “one-size-fits-all” solution. App developers will still have to customize the interface according to their user base.

9️⃣ Developers will get access and code

  • Developers will be taught the new design system at the Google I/O event. Also, they will be able to explore the “alpha code” and some design files.

🔟 Official launch will happen soon

  • Although the blog post has been deleted, the Wayback Machine has saved it. Now it will be officially unveiled at this month’s Google I/O.
